The Benefits of Cashew Milk

Cashew milk has a creamy, gentle nutty flavour that is high in protein and contains many essential nutrients that are beneficial to our health.

Cashew milk is made by soaking the raw nuts in filtered water to activate them, then once they are activated the liquid is drained off as this now contains enzyme inhibitors and phytic acid which can interfere with our digestion. We then add filtered water to the nuts and blend! The nuts are retained in the milk so you get all the nutritious benefits including fibre from the whole cashew nut. Other types of nut milks tend to discard the nuts when making milk so you lose the fibre content.

Cashew nuts are abundant sources of essential minerals. Minerals, especially manganese, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium are concentrated in these nuts. Selenium is an important micronutrient, which functions as a co-factor for antioxidant enzymes such as Glutathione peroxidases, one of the most powerful antioxidants in the body. Copper is a cofactor for many vital enzymes, including cytochrome c-oxidase and superoxide dismutase (other minerals function as co-factors for this enzyme are manganese and zinc). Zinc is a co-factor for many enzymes that regulate growth and development, gonadal function, digestion, and DNA (nucleic acid) synthesis. (1)

Vitamin K & Magnesium are also found in the nuts. Vitamin K is an essential part of several different proteins that are responsible for making blood clot and building strong bones. Magnesium works with hundreds of enzymes that produce energy and synthesize proteins to support your immune system.

They are rich in “heart-friendly” monounsaturated-fatty acids like oleic, and palmitoleic acids. These essential fatty acids help lower harmful LDL-cholesterol while increasing good HDL cholesterol in the blood. Research studies suggest that Mediterranean diet which is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids help to prevent coronary artery disease and strokes by favouring healthy blood lipid profile.(2)
